Research interests

Cognition and action "in the wild" occur in rich contexts. My research explores how information from multiple sources is integrated in naturalistic tasks, using a combination of empirical methods (standard lab tasks, eye tracking, and EEG/ERP) and computational modeling. My primary area of interest is spoken language comprehension. My other interests include: psycholinguistics in general, eye movements, vision (object recognition and scene perception), categorization, learning, reasoning and decision making (click here to see details regarding current and recent projects, and here to see a list of papers and presentations, with some downloadable manuscripts). Teaching

I teach two undergraduate courses: PSYC 2501, Cognitive Psychology, and PSYC 2100QW, Research Methods in Psychology. Syllabi are available via HuskyCT. A preliminary syllabus for Cognitive Psychology in Spring, 2009, is available here.

My graduate seminars include "The Mental Lexicon" (regarding various aspects of word-level processing in language understanding and production, including basics of visual and spoken word recognition, semantic representation, categorization, etc.), "Cognition" (a broad overview with emphasis on primary sources), and "Special Topics: Time Course Methods" (a hands-on introduction to eye tracking and ERP methodologies). Undergraduates: please note that you can register for graduate seminars with instructor permission. Please contact me if you are interested in a graduate seminar.

Service

My local service commitments include being chair of the web committee (and the day-to-day webmaster and maintainer of our departmental web pages -- yikes), and a member of the vision committee.

My external service commitments include Associate Editorships at Cogntive Science and the Journal of Memory and Language, member of the board of reviwers at Cognition, and a fair amount of ad-hoc reviewing for a few dozen journals, the NIH, and the NSF.
